BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Million Tips for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) is an
informative manual with multiple templates (statement of need from
your country, Dean’s letter, recommendations letter, letter for
clerkship/externship request, letter of support from your medical
school for a clerkship, CV, personal statement... ) that guide
international medical students and graduates on the process of
getting into residency training in the U.S.
The population targeted is medical students in medical schools
located out of the U.S., any international medical graduate that is
interested in practicing in the U.S. that resides either in or
outside of the US, family members of international medical
graduates, program directors of residency and fellowship training
programs in the U.S., international medical schools libraries, U.S.
embassies and consulates (students section) from around the world.
CONTENT SUMMARY
Every year, thousands of IMGs apply to U.S. residency programs to
enter a specialty that will allow them to practice in the U.S. or
their country of origin after the training. The shortage of American
medical graduates from U.S. medical schools has made it necessary to
fill graduate medical programs with IMGs. Every year, there are
around 25.000 residency training positions for only 15.000 American
medical graduates, around 10.000 residency training spots are filled
by IMGs. Statistics show that 50% of IMGs that apply for residency
successfully match with a graduate medical program.
Getting into residency in the U.S. is a journey that requires
good planning.
This book is intended to be a pocket mentor that will assist and
guide IMGs in critical career decisions regardless of where they are
on the path. An understanding of the complex background of IMGs and
the unique challenges they face at an emotional, financial and legal
level makes it necessary to lay a foundation for a strong mindset
for success.
The book is organized as a step by step process from the general
statistics on IMGs by country of origin with reasons to enter
residency training in the U.S to the choices made by IMGs after a
successful training. It describes the medical licensing procedure (ECFMG
certification) and USMLE step 1, 2 (CS and CK) and Step 3,
immigration status and visa options for IMGs in great details with
more than 6 ways to get a non-immigrant visa besides the J-1 and 4
ways to get the permanent residency status including the
self-sponsored green card. The detailed chapters on how to organize
and enhance the residency application, perform well at interviews
and have a successful match are a cornerstone in the process.
Getting into residency by itself is a tremendous achievement,
staying into residency could be a challenge for some IMGs that do
not adjust quickly to the American medical system, this is why I
have dedicated a part of the book to talk about the residency
training etiquette, cultural competency and tasks and milestones
that will propel IMGs to excellence in their individual programs.
The last part of the book explores the various choices IMGs make
after the training, as well as few stories of IMGs in various
situations that have come to the U.S. to enter a graduate medical
program.
